About TOARCO TORAJATOARCO TORAJA
In 18th century, there was an extraordinary type of coffee
that existed since it could only be harvested on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Hence the nickname, “The Masterpiece of Celebes,” given by European royalty.
During the chaos of the war,
the coffee disappeared from the market,
but was eventually brought back into circulation by Japanese coffee enthusiasts,
who had built roads to the abandoned plantations as well as re-cultivated the land.
Because of its trademark of excellence,
KEY COFFEE has been greatly admired by genuine coffee lovers over the past four decades.

The Characteristics of TOARCO TORAJA
The Hometown of TOARCO TORAJA
The hometown of TOARCO TORAJA is the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, sitting at just south of the equator.
The coffee is grown at our directly-managed Padamaran farm as well as other co-op farms located in mountains at an elevation of 1,000 to 1,800 meters. The mountain’s weak acidic soil, annual rainfall, and big temperature spikes between day and night are suitable for growing coffee beans, making them firm with a rich aroma and great flavor.

The 3 Important “P”s on How to Grow Premium Coffee
Without nature, and especially the local residents' help and support, TOARCO TORAJA would not exist.
Co-Existing with Nature
and Recycle-Based FarmingKEY COFFEE has been protecting animals and nature in Indonesia while co-exisitng with them. We plant cover crops such as fabaceae and poaceae plants around the coffee trees to protect the soil as well as for efficiency; shade trees to avoid direct sunlight; and use pulp as compost for one of the methods of recycle-based farming. KEY COFFEE has been keeping sustainability and simple farming methods for over 40 years.
Working Together with Farmers,
Merchants, and Employees.20% of the total production of TOARCO TORAJA is produced at Padamaran farm while 80% is purchased from local farmers and merchants. Immediately, our employees inspect the quality of the beans upon arrival. In addition, KEY COFFEE concentrates on creating a more efficient coffee planting environment by sharing knowledge, techniques, equipment like hulling machines, and seedlings to the locals.
Connections with the Local Indonesian Government
and Academic OrganizationsKEY COFFEE has been working together with the local government and the people of the region. In 2014, we opened up the TOARCO TORAJA coffee shop in Makassar on Sulawesi Island so that the community can enjoy the taste of our Toraja coffee. Since Indonesians prefer drip coffee, especially with lots of sugar, we give detailed lectures on the art of hand dripping to the local staffs at our KEY COFFEE shops.
